Helmet Initiative Expansion

The World Health Organization Helmet Initiative is growing! Two programmes, one in Vietnam, the other in Malaysia,  are on their way to being part of the Cooperating Helmet Initiative Programme, or CHIP. These programmes will form a network to  promote helmet work in different countries and regions of the world. The programmes are research centres, institutes, universities, NGOs, foundations and government departments or agencies that involved in research, education, community outreach, and policy elements as part of a programme to promote helmets. A CHIP is expected to:

  • serve as model "best practice" for helmet research and promotion;
  • serve as a national and regional advocate for the promotion of helmets;
  • provide technical advice and support on helmets to other programmes and organizations;
  • disseminate information on helmets through conferences and publication of articles;
  • conduct promotion and development research on helmets;
  • collaborate directly with WHO Helmet Initiative efforts by contributing reports and articles to Headlines, the Helmet Initiative web site, and by gathering and providing local and regional information on the status of helmet wearing, laws and enforcement.

The two programmes – the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation, based in Vietnam, and two universities in Malaysia  (Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Malaya) – are completing the final documentation and are on their way to final designation.
