WELCOME TO THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION HELMET INITIATIVE

The World Health Organization (WHO) Helmet Initiative was established in 1991 to promote the use of bicycle helmets as a universally important strategy to prevent and control injuries. From 1991-1999, the WHO Helmet Initiative was based in Atlanta at the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and later, at the Center for Injury Control at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University. Because of staffing limitations, activities of the Helmet Initiative were limited from 1999 until 2004, when WHO, as part of its strategy to prevent and control traffic injuries, encouraged the revitalization of the Initiative.

The main objective of the WHO Helmet Initiative remains the reduction of head injuries through the promotion of helmets, and we’ve expanded the scope to include motorcycle as well as bicycle helmets.

The WHO Helmet Initiative will publish on this website a quarterly newsletter, Headlines, about recent research, developments, and news about helmets throughout the world. In addition, this website will feature reviews of published research studies, information on new products, and resources to help you learn more about the promotion and evaluation of helmets. We are partnering with SafetyLit to make available an online database of science-based literature on helmets and motorcycle and bicycle safety. We are available to answer your questions about helmets and helmet promotion.

We look forward to receiving your ideas and suggestions as to how we can serve you.
